‘Who Dares Leaves’ SAS Recruitment Falls Amid Concerns Over Leadership

SAS Struggles With Low Recruitment and Unprecedented Exits

Britain’s most iconic regiment, the SAS, is quietly fighting a battle of its own, and this time it’s not in Helmand or the Balkans. It’s back home, in the recruitment office.

According to senior figures, the Regiment that used to beat volunteers off with a stick is now struggling to fill roles. Not because the standards have slipped, but because officers don’t fancy spending the next 30 years defending split-second combat decisions in a courtroom.

‘Why volunteer if the reward is a career’s worth of investigations?’

That’s the mood right now. And it’s gotten so bad that the SAS has reportedly started pulling in reservists for senior positions, including, unbelievably, a part-timer who once had his pistol and classified papers nicked on deployment. Only in this country could losing your gat abroad still get you considered for promotion.

During his court martial, SAS commanders were basically begging the judge:
“Please don’t boot him. We’ve got no one left to fill the jobs.”
If that isn’t a red flag, nothing is.

Lawfare Kicks Off in Westminster

The issue exploded onto the floor of Parliament this week. Stuart Anderson, a former soldier and now Tory MP, accused the government of letting the side down and warned that endless investigations are becoming a national security issue.

Former SAS CO Colonel Richard Williams didn’t mince his words either:

“Why would the bravest and brightest sign up for guaranteed persecution?”

Hard to argue with that. If every operation you lead hangs over your head for decades, recruitment posters lose their appeal fast.

A Regiment Under Investigation

Up to 100 SAS veterans, including senior officers, are currently being investigated over actions in Northern Ireland and Afghanistan.

This comes after Labour scrapped the Legacy Act, the one that offered limited legal protection to troops. The replacement was a Troubles Bill that reopened the book on nine historic SAS cases, plus a continuing inquiry into alleged extra-judicial killings in Afghanistan.

Serving soldiers and veterans are watching this unfold and thinking the same thing:

“If they’re willing to put the Regiment through this, what chance do the rest of us have?”

Even General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith, former head of the Army, said troops no longer believe the MoD has their back. And let’s be honest. When a four-star starts saying morale is “corrosive and toxic,” it’s not because the cookhouse ran out of bacon.

Pressure Mounts on Downing Street

David Davis, former SAS reservist, is leading a Commons debate on lawfare. Nine retired generals have already piled in, hammering the government for leaving troops exposed long after the shooting stops.

The MoD’s official line?

“We are immensely proud of our Armed Forces…”

Nice sentiment. But pride doesn’t pay legal fees, and it doesn’t undo 20 years of anxiety for blokes who did exactly what the country asked of them.

The Bottom Line

The SAS is hurting, not from lack of talent but lack of confidence in the system that’s supposed to protect its people.

Until Britain stops treating its operators like disposable political liabilities, the Regiment’s biggest recruitment threat won’t be a foreign enemy.

It’ll be the fear of the knock on the door.
