The military community is mourning the loss of Royal Marine Commando Joshua Houghton, a 21-year-old from Devon who tragically lost his life in a single-car collision on the M48 near Chepstow, Wales, in the early hours of November 1st.
Joshua, who had only recently earned his Green Beret after completing one of the toughest training courses in the world, was stationed with 42 Commando Royal Marines and just beginning his career in service.
His family described him as an “adored son, brother, and friend” whose love for life was infectious and whose spirit embodied everything it means to wear the coveted Commando flash.
“He adored his big brother and followed him like a shadow,” his family said in a statement shared through Gwent Police. “With a smile for every situation and a passion for adventure, he brought joy and energy to every moment. Joshua found his true calling in the Royal Marines — he was determined, fearless, and full of heart.”
They went on to say that Joshua perfectly reflected the four core values of the Royal Marines; courage, determination, cheerfulness in the face of adversity, and unselfishness.
His friends have since described him as an “inspiration”, the type of lad who could lift spirits even in the darkest moments — known for his random facts, boldness, and humour.
“He saw the good in everyone,” his family added. “Joshua was fearless, always ready to help others, and his sense of humour never faded no matter the challenge.”
Unlike many his age, Joshua wasn’t one to chase social media fame – he preferred the genuine bond of true friendship, loyalty, and commitment that defined both his personal life and his service.
“He’s left a giant hole in the lives of those who knew him,” his family said, “but he’s also left behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and kindness that will continue to inspire.”
As tributes pour in from across the forces community, Joshua’s name will stand as a reminder of the very best of what it means to serve. Loyal to the end, proud of his brothers, and full of that unmistakable Commando spirit.
