A large search operation has now concluded off Ireland’s northwest coast after a member of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) went missing from a UK naval support vessel.
The BBC reported that the crew member was last seen aboard the ship RFA Tidesurge at approximately 22:30 on Friday night, according to Irish Coast Guard sources. The vessel made a distress call just before 09:00 on Saturday morning, which was located north of Tory Island, off the coast of County Donegal.
The search was escalated into a major, multi-agency operation within minutes. Irish Coast Guard helicopters and aircraft swept the area from above, while the Irish Air Corps and multiple RNLI lifeboats scoured the waterline. A UK naval support vessel also joined the effort, working alongside civilian crews in a coordinated effort across a wide stretch of coastline.
After an extensive search, the Ministry of Defence confirmed that sadly the missing person has not been located. In a formal statement, they said the individual’s family has been notified, and an investigation is now underway.
As of today the search has officially been called off as First Sea Lord, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, pays his respects, saying:
“At this deeply upsetting time, my thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing crew member. We are thankful to the Irish Coast Guard, RNLI, Air Corps and Royal Navy teams for their determined efforts.”
