British forces are deploying to Belgium after a formal request for assistance amid a wave of suspected Russian drone incursions that briefly shut down Belgian airspace, including Brussels’ main airport.

The move follows a series of drone sightings over both civilian and military sites, prompting concerns that hostile surveillance or interference operations are targeting critical infrastructure across Europe.

Belgium Requests UK Assistance

Belgian authorities confirmed that they temporarily closed Brussels Zaventem Airport on Thursday night after multiple drones were detected nearby. The incident affected around 3,000 passengers, and several flights were cancelled or diverted.

Brussels Airlines said the disruptions had resulted in “significant operational costs,” and security services increased patrols across affected areas. Drone activity was also reported near a military base, escalating concern about possible coordinated reconnaissance efforts.

In response, the UK has sent both personnel and specialised counter-drone equipment following a direct request from Belgium’s armed forces earlier this week.

UK Confirms Deployment

Chief of the Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, confirmed the deployment during an interview with the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg .

“The Defence Secretary and I agreed that we would deploy our people and our equipment to Belgium to help them,” Sir Richard said, adding that British assets were already en route.

While he stopped short of naming Russia as the culprit, Sir Richard described the link as “plausible,” acknowledging that Western intelligence services have long tracked Russian interest in European infrastructure vulnerabilities.

Possible Russian Involvement

Belgium’s Defence Minister Theo Francken stated that while Russian involvement is suspected, no direct evidence has yet been presented.

“There are signs of coordination, but nothing that conclusively links these drone incursions to Moscow,” Francken said. “However, this activity has reached a level that poses a serious threat not only to our military sites but also to civilian infrastructure.”

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has also voiced concern, warning that European airspace is “increasingly contested by hostile actors” and that a united response is essential.

A Growing Threat to European Security

The latest incidents come amid a rising tempo of hybrid warfare activity across Europe. In recent months, several NATO member states have reported unusual drone or electronic interference incidents near military installations, energy facilities, and communications hubs.

Analysts warn that such operations — often referred to as grey zone tactics — aim to destabilise European defences without crossing the threshold into open conflict.

The UK’s rapid response highlights its ongoing role as a key NATO partner in countering unconventional threats. Britain’s expertise in electronic warfare, intelligence sharing, and counter-drone operations has been increasingly relied upon by European allies since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Belgium’s Heightened Alert

Belgian authorities remain on heightened alert following the incidents. Temporary no-fly zones have been established around sensitive areas, and both the Belgian Air Component and civilian agencies have increased airspace monitoring.

Francken described the drone incursions as “a new phase in hybrid operations against Europe,” warning that they may represent testing of Western defences or an attempt to gather intelligence on NATO movements.

The UK’s Broader Role

For Britain, the deployment underlines a broader commitment to collective European defence under NATO Article 5 obligations. Experts suggest the deployment may include RAF Regiment personnel and the Army’s CUAS task force.

The UK Ministry of Defence declined to give operational details but said in a short statement:

“We stand ready to support our allies against any emerging threat. The UK remains fully committed to European security and to countering hostile state activity in all its forms.”

As investigations continue, both UK and Belgian officials have stressed the importance of coordination between NATO partners to counter hybrid threats that blur the line between peace and warfare.

Analysis: A Warning Sign for Europe

While the full extent of the threat remains unclear, this latest episode reinforces how European nations are increasingly vulnerable to low-cost, high-impact technologies.

Drones – once tools of surveillance and defence — have now become key assets in modern asymmetric warfare. For countries like Belgium, where military and civilian infrastructure operate in close proximity, the potential for disruption is enormous.

For the UK, the mission is another reminder that deterrence in the 2020s is as much about countering invisible threats as it is about conventional firepower.
